Working life is made up of more than job titles. It includes learning a role, understanding an organization, deciding when to change direction and figuring out what kind of progress matters to you. BigTop is a careers blog that looks at those decisions in their everyday context.

The four sections are Careers, Recruitment, Workplace, and Skills & Training. They connect the experience of looking for work with the experience of doing it, leaving room for readers at different stages and with different ambitions.

Careers explores choices over time: entering a field, developing within it, making a transition or reconsidering a path. A description of one route can be useful without being presented as a formula everyone should follow. Responsibilities and opportunities differ from person to person.

Understand both sides of hiring

Recruitment considers how roles are described, candidates are assessed and hiring processes are organized. Seeing the process from more than one perspective can make unfamiliar steps easier to understand. It also creates space to examine the assumptions behind common practices.

Workplace brings the focus to daily collaboration, communication and the arrangements through which work gets done. A policy and its everyday experience are not always identical, so practical detail matters when discussing an organizational idea.

Skills & Training looks at learning with a purpose. Choosing what to study, finding ways to practice and assessing whether a learning opportunity fits a goal are questions worth considering before committing time or money.

BigTop combines explanatory articles with discussion of changes in employment and professional life.
